Founded in 1927, our roots reach back to the very beginnings of the automotive exhaust system business nearly 86 years ago. Today, we continue the tradition of providing high quality mufflers, exhaust pipes, and catalytic converters to our commercial customers, and auto service professionals.

Catalytic Converter Manufacturing

AP manufactures a vast array of technologically advanced catalytic converters. AP catalytic converters are designed to be durable and our use of stainless steel materials provides for a long life product. Premium-grade ceramic substrates are processed in our factories to OEM performance and reliability standards. Our research engineers are specialized in material science, surface chemistry, and metallurgy. State-of-the-art production methods, coating techniques, advanced materials, and chemistry, all come together resulting in industry leading designs and emission control solutions.

Catalyst Technology

The catalytic converter is a marvel of chemical and engineering technology.  It cleans gases passing through vehicles’ exhaust systems. Catalytic converters typically consist of a ceramic or metal honeycombed monolith substrate that carries precious metal catalysts. The coated substrate is wrapped in an protective thermal mat that expands when heated, securing and insulating the substrate, which is contained in a tough stainless steel shell and becomes a component in an engine exhaust system.  As exhaust gases pass over the catalysts, chemical reactions occur that convert pollutants into harmless gases and water. Hydrocarbons combine with oxygen to become carbon dioxide. Nitrous oxides react with carbon monoxide to produce nitrogen and carbon dioxide, and with hydrogen to produce nitrogen and water vapor.  Our chemists and metallurgical engineers have this expertise.
